2 Days in Wayanad: A Romantic Weekend Itinerary for Couples

2 Days in Wayanad: A Romantic Weekend Itinerary for Couples

By Vivek

The mist hadn’t quite lifted from the emerald hills when we rolled into Wayanad, the air crisp and smelling faintly of damp earth and something wonderfully green. You know that feeling when you’re escaping the city for just a couple of days and every breath feels like a mini-vacation? Yeah, that was us. My partner and I were on a mission: to cram as much romance and adventure as possible into a quick 2 day Wayanad couple itinerary without feeling like we needed a holiday from our holiday. And trust me, Wayanad delivered.

I’ve done my share of trekking and budget travel, but this time, it was about finding that sweet spot between exploration and pure, unadulterated couple time. Wayanad is perfect for it. It’s got those adrenaline kicks, sure, but also pockets of absolute serenity where you can just be, soaking it all in together. Here’s how we made our two days count, balancing adventure with those quiet, memorable moments.

Day 1: Caves, Waterfalls, and a View Worth the Climb

We kicked off Day 1 with a dose of history and a decent workout – the legendary Edakkal Caves. Honestly, if you’re picturing an easy stroll into a cave, adjust your expectations. This is more of a mini-trek, a proper scramble up rocky paths and then navigating a tight squeeze or two inside the caves themselves. But that’s the fun part! Helping each other over a tricky rock, laughing at our clumsy attempts – it actually felt pretty romantic, in a rugged sort of way. The ancient petroglyphs inside are mind-blowing, taking you back thousands of years. It’s a bit tiring, especially in the humidity, but totally worth it for the sense of achievement and the unique experience.

After sweating it out at the caves, the idea of a gushing waterfall sounded like a dream. Soochipara Falls was our next stop, and let me tell you, it was the perfect cool-down. The trek down to the falls can be a bit steep, so make sure you’ve got sturdy shoes – no flip-flops for this one, folks! The sheer power of the water crashing down is incredible, and you can even take a dip in the natural pool if you’re feeling brave (and if the water levels are safe, always check!). It’s refreshing, invigorating, and just what you need to wash off the dust from the caves.

As the afternoon started to mellow, we made our way to Neelimala Viewpoint for sunset. This is where Wayanad really shows off. The drive itself is scenic, winding through tea and coffee plantations. Once you get to the viewpoint, you’re treated to panoramic vistas of rolling hills and valleys stretching out as far as the eye can see. Finding a quiet spot, just the two of us, watching the sky paint itself in fiery oranges and soft purples as the sun dipped below the horizon… that’s the stuff romantic memories are made of. It was the perfect end to a day that started with ancient history and ended with nature’s grandeur. Pro tip: bring a light jacket; it can get breezy up there as the sun goes down.

Day 2: Wildlife, Water, and Wayanad’s Green Gold

Waking up before the sun on a holiday can feel like a crime, but for a wildlife safari, it’s non-negotiable. We were up bright and early for a jungle safari, hoping to spot some of Wayanad’s elusive residents. The air was still cool and damp as we bumped along the forest tracks. While we didn’t get lucky with the really big cats (they’re shy, what can I say?), we saw plenty of deer, monkeys, and a kaleidoscope of birds. The thrill isn’t just in seeing the animals, it’s in the quiet anticipation, the shared whispers, and the feeling of being truly immersed in nature. It’s a gentle adventure, but totally worth the early alarm. Don’t forget your binoculars!

After the morning’s excitement, we needed something a bit more relaxed. The Banasura Sagar Dam, India’s largest earthen dam, was just the ticket. It’s a seriously impressive structure, surrounded by verdant hills. We opted for a leisurely pedal boat ride on the reservoir. There’s something wonderfully simple and charming about pedalling across calm waters with your favourite person, taking in the scenery. They also offer speed boating if you’re looking for a bit more zip, but for us, the slow pace was perfect. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the beautiful engineering marvel and its natural surroundings.

As the afternoon drifted towards evening, we headed to the tea gardens of Meppadi. This was a must for me. Walking through those perfectly manicured emerald carpets, the air thick with the subtle, earthy scent of tea leaves, is incredibly calming. It’s not a strenuous activity; it’s simply a chance to stroll, breathe, and enjoy the serene beauty. We found a little spot offering fresh chai, and just sat there, sipping our tea, watching the clouds drift by. It was the perfect prelude to our evening.

To cap off our little Wayanad escape, we treated ourselves to a proper slow, candlelit dinner. After all the exploring, the climbing, the early mornings, a bit of indulgence was definitely in order. We found a lovely place that served up some authentic Keralan cuisine, full of fragrant spices and fresh local ingredients. It was the ideal way to reflect on our adventures, toast to new memories, and just enjoy each other’s company without any distractions. Sometimes, you gotta splurge a little for those moments that stick with you.

Wayanad, even for just two days, felt like a proper reset. It’s an ideal spot for couples looking for a mix of active exploration and peaceful, romantic downtime. Getting around is easiest with a rented cab, or if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bike (but be mindful of the winding roads!). And remember, packing layers is always a good idea – mornings can be cool, days warm, and evenings crisp.
